TUNAY DEMRAN KOLEKSİYONU’NDAN NADİR BİR SİKKE: SELANİK İMPARATORU (1237-1242) / DESPOT (1242-1244) IOANNES KOMNENOS DOUKAS DÖNEMİNE AİT BILLON ASPRON TRAKHY

Abstract

Tunay Demran Koleksiyonu’nda 370 adet Hellenistik, Roma İmparatorluğu, Roma Eyalet, Bizans, İslami ve Ortaçağ Avrupa sikkesi yer almaktadır. Tunay Demran Koleksiyonu Batı Anadolu bölgesinde, özellikle Manisa ve çevresinde, bulunan sikke ve arkeolojik eserlerden oluşmaktadır.
Koleksiyonda yer alan Bizans İmparatorluğu dönemine ait bakır sikkeler içerisinde bir adet billon aspron trakhy dikkat çekmektedir. Selanik İmparatorluğu idarecilerinden Ioannes Komnenos Doukas’ın (1237–1242 imparator; 1242-1244 despotes) döneminde Thessaloniki darphanesinde basılan billon aspron trakhy döneminin nadir örneklerindendir. Batı Anadolu’da gerçekleştirilen kazı çalışmalarına ait bilimsel yayınlarında bu sikkenin benzer bir örneğine henüz rastlanmamıştır. Bu durum ise billon aspron trakhy’nin Thessaloniki ve çevresinde sirkülasyonda olması ile açıklanabilir. Dolayısıyla, koleksiyonda yer alan Batı Anadolu buluntusu billon aspron trakhy’nin bölgedeki varlığı oldukça ilginçtir. Batı Anadolu’ya 13. yüzyılda Balkanlarda ticaret yapan bir tüccar ya da bu bölgede bulunan bir askerin vasıtasıyla geldiği düşünülmektedir.
Çalışmamızda, 13. yüzyılın ilk yarısındaki siyasi ve ekonomik gelişmeler eşliğinde Tunay Demran Koleksiyonu’nda yer alan nadir sikke buluntusu billon aspron trakhy tanıtılacaktır. Billon aspron trakhy’nin tedavüle girmesini sağlayan idareci ve yönetim alanı hakkında bilgiler verilecek ve billon aspron trakhy’nin her iki yüzünde yer alan betimler ikonografik detaylarıyla incelenecektir. Koleksiyonda yer alan nadir sikke günümüze ulaşan örneklerinden farklı olarak yassı formdadır ve daha ağırdır. Çalışmamız kapsamında Tunay Demran Koleksiyonu’nda yer alan Batı Anadolu buluntusu nadir billon aspron trakhy döneminin diğer örnekleriyle birlikte değerlendirilecek ve 13. yüzyılda bir prototip olarak üretildiği önerisi sunulacaktır.

A RARE COIN FROM TUNAY DEMRAN COLLECTION: BILLON ASPRON TRAKHY FROM THE PERIOD OF THE EMPEROR OF THESSALONIKI (1237-1242) / DESPOT (1242-1244) IOANNES KOMNENOS DOUKAS

Abstract

Tunay Demran Collection includes 370 Hellenistic, Roman Imperial, Roman Provincial, Byzantine, Islamic, and Medieval European coins. The coins and archaeological artifacts in the Tunay Demran collection are the finds of the Western Anatolian region and consist of artifacts found in Manisa and its surroundings.
Among the coins of the Byzantine Empire period in the collection, a rare billon aspron trachy draws attention. The billon aspron trachy produced in the mint of Thessalonica during the reign of John Comnenus Ducas (1237-1242 emperor–1242-1244 despot), one of the rulers of the Empire of Thessalonica, is a rare example of the period. It is understood that a similar example has not yet been found in scientific publications about the excavations carried out in Western Anatolia. This can be explained by the fact that billon aspron trachy was in circulation in Thessalonica and its surroundings. Therefore, the presence of billon aspron trachy, the Western Anatolian find in the collection, is quite interesting. It is considered to have come to Western Anatolia through a merchant trading in the Balkans in the 13th century or a soldier in this region.
In our study, a rare billon aspron trachy find in the Tunay Demran Collection will be introduced in light of the political and economic developments in the first half of the 13th century. Information will be presented about the ruler and government area that enabled billon aspron trachy to be put into circulation. The depictions and iconographical details on both sides of the billon aspron trachy will be examined. The coin in the collection is flat and weighs much more, unlike the examples that have survived to the present day. The rare Western Anatolian finds in the collection will be evaluated together with other examples of the billon aspron trachy period. It will be proposed that a rare billon aspron trachy, which was researched and examined in our study, was minted as a prototype in the 13th century.
