Success Factors in the European Football Championship

Öz

In this study, the aim was to determine the critical factors for success in UEFA European Men's Football Championships. Accordingly, data on various variables related to national teams participating in six European Football Championships held between 2000 and 2020 were collected and analyzed using logistic regression. The analysis results indicate that the number of players from Champions League teams and the position of countries in the FIFA rankings are influential in reaching the quarterfinals, while the number of players from teams of the Champions League and reaching the last 16 in UEFA Cup has an impact on reaching the semi-finals. In addition to these variables, the number of players from the top five major football leagues and the position of countries in the FIFA rankings positively affect the likelihood of countries being more successful, whereas the number of players from different club teams in the tournament squad and having a foreign national team coach negatively affect the probability of countries being successful. The results yöshow that a high quality population is more necessary for success than a large population of the country.

Avrupa Futbol Şampiyonasında Başarı Faktörleri

Bu çalışmada, UEFA Avrupa Erkekler Futbol Şampiyonalarında başarılı olabilmek için kritik olan faktörlerin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu doğrultuda, 2000 ile 2020 yılları arasında düzenlenmiş olan altı Avrupa Futbol Şampiyonası’na katılan ülke milli takımları için çeşitli değişkenlerine ait veriler toplanmış ve lojistik regresyon ile analiz edilmiştir. Analiz sonuçları, ülkelerin çeyrek finale ulaşmasında Şampiyonlar Ligi takımlarından gelen oyuncu sayısı ile ülkelerin FIFA ülkeler sıralamasındaki konumunun, yarı finale ulaşmasında ise Şampiyonlar Ligi ve UEFA Kupası son 16 turuna kalan takımlardan gelen oyuncu sayısının etkili olduğunu göstermektedir. Bu değişkenlere ek olarak, 5 büyük futbol liginden gelen oyuncu sayısı ile ülkelerin FIFA sıralamasındaki konumları, ülkelerin daha başarılı olma olasılığını pozitif yönde etkilerden, turnuva kadrosundaki farklı kulüp takımlarından gelen oyuncu sayısı ve milli takım antrenörünün yabancı uyruklu olması ülkelerin başarılı olma olasılığını negatif yönde etkilemektedir. Elde edilen sonuçlar başarı için kaliteli nüfusunun, ülke nüfusunun kalabalık olmasından daha gerekli olduğunu göstermektedir.
