This article is a continuation of the articles we published in the previous issues of Gephyra (23, 2022 and 24, 2022). The article analyses three inscriptions found in various villages of Bilecik. On the second artefact there is both an epigram (no. 2a) and a grave inscription in prose (no. 2b). Of these inscriptions, only the stele described in no. 3 is today in the Bilecik Museum. The other two inscriptions are probably still in the field. We read the first inscription from a photograph given to us by the museum authorities, but we did not see the inscription itself. We read the second inscription from a photograph given to us by a person in Bozüyük, but we did not see the stone itself either.
The first inscription found in the village of Danışment in Yenipazar is a funerary epigram written for an old man named Antonius. It appears that one of his sons, Maximus, was a gerusiastes who ruled the gerusia. The second inscription found during the construction of the major intercity road in Bozüyük consists of two separate inscriptions carved on stone in different periods. Inscription A is a funerary epigram for a man named Gaius and his family. Inscription B was carved later and the Gaianus mentioned in the inscription is probably the grandson of the Gaius mentioned in inscription A. Inscription B is not an epigram, although it contains poetic words. Although the right half of the last epigram, no. 3, is missing, the inscription could be restored to a large extent. The grave owner, a farmer, probably died at the age of 70, leaving behind a young wife and three small children as orphans.

Bilecik’ten Yeni Mezar Epigramları

Bu makale, Gephyra dergisinin önceki sayılarında (23, 2022 ve 24, 2022) yayınladığımız makalelerin devamı niteliğindedir. Makalede Bilecik ilinin çeşitli köylerinde bulunan üç yazıt incelenmektedir. 2 numaralı taşın üzerinde hem bir epigram (no. 2a) hem de düz yazı şeklinde bir mezar yazıtı (no. 2b) vardır. Bu yazıtlardan sadece 3 numarada tanıtılan stel bugün Bilecik Müzesi’ndedir. Diğer iki yazıt olasılıkla hâlâ arazide olmalıdır. Birinci yazıtı müze yetkililerinin bizlere verdiği fotoğraftan okuduk, yazıtın kendisini görmedik. İkinci yazıtı ise Bozüyük’teki bir şahsın bize verdiği fotoğraftan okuduk, fakat o taşın da kendisini göremedik.
Yenipazar’daki Danışment köyünde bulunmuş olan birinci yazıt Antonius adında yaşlı bir adam için yazılmış bir mezar epigramıdır. Evlatlarından birisi olan Maximus’un gerousia’yı yöneten bir gerousiastes olduğu anlaşılmaktadır. Bozüyük’teki şehirlerarası büyük yol yapılırken bulunan ikinci yazıt taş üzerine farklı dönemlerde kazınmış iki ayrı yazıttan oluşmaktadır. A yazıtı Gaius adındaki bir adam ve ailesi için yazılmış bir mezar epigramıdır. B yazıtı ise taşa daha sonra kazınmıştır ve yazıtta adı geçen Gaianus olasılıkla A yazıtında adı geçen Gaius’un torunudur. İçinde şiirsel kelimeler geçse de B yazıtı bir epigram değildir. 3 numaralı son epigramın sağ yarısı kayıp olmasına rağmen yazıt büyük oranda tamamlanabilmiştir. Çiftçi olan mezar sahibinin olasılıkla 70 yaşında öldüğü ve geride genç karısıyla üç küçük çocuğu yetim bıraktığı anlaşılmaktadır. Yazıtların Türkçe çevirileri şöyledir:
1. Ben, akıllı, güçlü, yaşı gereği bütün kararlarda adil olan Antonius, ilerlemiş yaşlılığımda hiçkimsenin gerisinde kalmayarak tüm dindar güvenilirliğimin karşılığını aldım. Cenaze töreni, babalarından daha önemli olan evlatlarım tarafından organize edildi: Kentteki Gerusia’nın toplanmasında söz sahibi olan Maximus, tatlı huylu Antonius, Severus; kocasını üstün bir sevgiyle seven, önceden vefat etmiş olan anneleri Apollonia’nın aynı fikirde olan evlatları! Ey yolcu, (bu evlatlar hep beraber) gençlere ve iyi çocukları olan ebeveynlere (böylelikle) dindarlık hatırası olan bir hediye bağışladılar.
2. Yazıt A: Toprağın içindeki şu kaba taştan mezar pek saygın ve onurlu bir kişi olarak vatan toprağında yatan ben Gaius’undur. Bütün erdemlerin çiçeğini topladım ne bir kimseye acı vererek ne de adaletsiz bir yaşam sürerek, aksine kendi ellerimle (= gücümle) çabalayarak. Bir konut (= mezar), dertleri çözen bir konut, onun, Domna’nın ve sevgili çocuklarının sevgili gerçek konutu – bu armağanı dindarlığım için bana Tanrı verdi.
Yazıt B: Marcianus oğlu, büyük Gaius’un torunu, eques Romanus, gerousia üyesi, onurlu bir şekilde yaşayan, (hayatın) tadını çıkaran, saygın kişiler tarafından agorada onurlandırılan, - - - - - - vatanında ün sahibi olan, ne adaletsizlik yapan ne de adaletsiz bir yaşam süren Gaianus - - - - -
3. Çok erken ölen çiftçi (Seuthes?) yatıyor burada karısı Apphia’yı ardında bırakıp [. . .]. (Apphia’nın) babalarının yetim bıraktığı Philoksenos, Tryph[on] (?) ve Seuthes adında üç küçük çocuğu vardır. Yeğenleri Andronikos (?) ve Maximus sevgili eşleriyle birlikte ve en çok sevdiği Seuthes onu hayattayken ve öldükten sonra unutulmaz onurlarla övdüler. Yetmiş? yıl yaşadı.
